Will Avatar beat Titanic?

Postby Mercury » 11 Jan 2010, 18:04

Well it's closing the gap and now officially the 2nd most successful film of all time but it still has some way to go to catch Titanic. It will be interesting to see if it does. I think it probably will...just.

The 2 most successful films both directed by James Cameron. If it also does well at the oscars then watch out as he will no doubt be giving us his "king of the world" speech.

I haven't seen Avatar yet but am hoping to next week.

I'm not a fan of Cameron but I enjoyed Titanic far more than Avatar. The latter is all FX and very little story.

$500 million short of Titanic now (as of this weeks takings). It will probably still be showing in March near Oscar time, so it could end up with 2Billion worlwide. Strangely I'm not expecting it to beat the UK's most successful film which was last years Mama Mia, it finally toppled Titanic with a gross of just under £70m. Of course I might be wrong.

I tried in vain to sit through Mamma Mia but it drove me up the wall.

Vin I agree with you Avatar is all spectacle and little substance. I liked the idea of humans finding a substance they needed and starting a war for it, very much like whats happening now with America and Iraq. While i wasnt a fan of Titanic it did have more substance to it and was a well done love story. The films that make the most always seem to be pushed in your face the most in terms of adverts and other promotional materiel etc.

I think Avatar might earn few Oscars...but won't be like it did for Titanic!

I used to take the Oscars quite seriously when I was young but I really can't take them seriously anymore. Cameron knows Avatar stands little chance of winning best film because it's sci-fi.

Here we are

http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegr ... world-wide

I would say in 2 weeks Avatar will be No 1.

It will be interesting to see though if it topples Titanic in the US. This might take a little longer.

Seems like Avatar is already favourite for best film - but I will believe that when it happens. Never happened before.

Yes just passed it. Still waiting though to see it pass Titanic in America, still has some way to go. Should happen in a couple of weeks. I very much doubt it will beat Mama Mia in the UK though. Still needs to make another £20m.

Well Avatar has finally been dethroned. Still it has now over taken Titanic in the US and will certainly become the UK's No1 film by next week.
