Passed “15” by the BBFC after approximately 10 seconds of cuts
In the bust at the beginning of the film, the close-up shots of Al (Dylan McDermott) with the plastic bag over his head have been removed, to reduce the focus on his suffocating and terror. The BBFC insisted the act of the plastic bag on the head be “reduced to establishment only” Frank’s (Clint Eastwood) shooting of the two captors has also been reduced in length to make the casual yet sudden shooting of them seem less vicious and shocking. We now fail to see the brief rear shot of the second captor being shot, along with a cloud of blood exploding from his back. This cut applies to the widescreen print. In the pan and scan version, the bloody impact happens off-screen due to the cropping, so this small cut is restored in the VHS tape. When Leary (John Malkovich) kills the bank clerk and her housemate, the BBFC ensured the sound effects of the latter’s head being smashed into the mirror were heavily reduced in volume. This footage is present in the VHS version. The BBFC also say the sound effects of the ladies’ necks being wrenched have also been considerably reduced in volume. However, neither the VHS or DVD versions include the footage of the neck-breaking, so instead we have a sloppily-cut scene due to their complete removal. Perhaps the cinema version was edited differently to tone down just the sound effects?
Special thanks to Brian for helping with these cuts.
